Objective
We are looking for a highly experienced and energetic business development professional who has a proven record of success bringing in new business and exceeding customer expectations. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, be self-motivated and goal-oriented, and take an organized and thoughtful approach to understanding customer needs and winning work.
The Business Development Manager will be focused on identifying, qualifying, capturing, and winning new business in the Mission Critical construction market, with emphasis on data centers, power generation facilities, and other high-reliability infrastructure for private and public clients. While the Midwest will remain a core market, this role will pursue opportunities nationwide based on project scope, delivery model, and strategic fit.
This position will be expected to establish strategies to penetrate targeted mission critical markets and clients, working closely with internal teams to position Modern’s capabilities relative to competitors and to win work in fast-paced, technically complex environments.
Responsibilities
Maintain a specialized understanding of the mission critical construction industry, including data centers, power generation, and other high-uptime infrastructure
Identify and develop new business opportunities and sales pipeline with mission critical owners, developers, utilities, Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) firms, and strategic partners across regional and national markets, based on opportunity alignment and scope
Build and maintain relationships with owners, developers, engineers, and integrated delivery teams responsible for engineering, equipment procurement, and construction execution on mission critical projects
Develop pursuit strategies aligned with a variety of delivery and scope models, including:
Full construction delivery
Integrated project delivery teams
Fabrication-only or partial-scope engagements, where Modern’s manufacturing and prefabrication capabilities provide strategic value
Work collaboratively with estimating, preconstruction, engineering, fabrication, and operations teams to ensure pursuits align with Modern’s execution capabilities, capacity, and risk profile
Maintain close client relationships throughout the project lifecycle, recognizing the importance of schedule sensitivity, coordination, and operational reliability in mission critical environments
Maintain client relationships after project completion through regular check-ins, positioning Modern for repeat work, expansions, and future phases
Represent Modern at client meetings, industry events, and partner engagements to strengthen relationships and expand mission critical market presence
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Five (5)+ years of experience in industrial and commercial construction, with exposure to mission critical, data center, power generation, or similarly complex infrastructure projects preferred
Demonstrated ability to support or sell work into integrated delivery environments and/or scope-specific engagements (such as fabrication-only or prefabrication-driven work)
Ability to manage long sales cycles, multi-phase developments, and high-dollar pursuits typical of mission critical work
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable engaging at executive, technical, and operational levels
Willingness to travel up to 60% of the time to client meetings, site visits, industry events, and internal coordination meetings
