Virtual Design and Construction
Modern was one of the first mechanical contractors to embrace CAD/BIM technology and we’ve continued mastering it ever since. Our CAD/BIM department has several capabilities, including 3D laser scanning, coordination drawings, and fabrication drawings for piping, plumbing, med-gas, and duct installations. Our CAD designers have worked on projects ranging from new hospitals to boiler replacements. No project is too large or small for our CAD/BIM department.
CAD and BIM
CAD and BIM services allow the contractor to virtually design and build the project with 2D/3D modeling before construction begins, which enables the contractor to identify and remedy design conflicts in advance.

Design Staff
Our Virtual Design and Construction Department (VDC) staff is comprised of CAD Designers and CAD Technicians who gained their expertise from either working in the field as a journeyman/foreman or through a technical school. The balance of both field and technical school experience enables our VDC Department to provide unparalleled BIM capabilities backed by institutional knowledge. Our goal is to maintain a 1:1 ratio of field-to-technical school trained staff. Our VDC staff members with field experience have at least 10 years in the trades, with one having over 30 years.

Software
Our Virtual Design and Construction Department designs and coordinates building models using advanced software called Autodesk Building Design Suite Ultimate 2016. This software suite includes AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks Manage. We also use Autodesk Fabrication CADMep 2016 and Bluebeam Revu. Regarding collaboration, we prefer to use Navisworks Manage to coordinate BIM models to enhance fabrication opportunities and eliminate clashes prior to construction. We also use Bluebeam Studio/ Sessions for PDF drawing collaboration and project coordination.
Equipment
Modern is one of the two plumbing and mechanical contractors in the region able to perform 3D scanning and laser measurements to improve accuracy, reduce manpower requirements, and accelerate design and construction schedules.
The two laser scanners we use are: Trimble RTS773 and Trimble TX5 3D Scanner
